Port Renfrew

Red Creek Fir

The largest known Douglas fir tree on earth is located in the San Juan River Valley in Pacheedaht territory. The trail is only 1 km in and out and is a very easy hike. There is a magnificent stand of Western red Cedars just a few minutes from where the trail ends. As you approach this massive tree, it feels like stepping into another world or a different time where you walk with Giants. The Red Creek Fir is nearly 1000 years old, 242 feet tall, and 14 feet in diameter.

We are so very fortunate that the logging companies have left these giants for us big tree enthusiasts to appreciate.

Lonely Doug

Forty minutes from Port Renfrew up to Gordon River Valley stands the second-largest Douglas fir tree in the world. Named Lonely Doug, it is the only remaining tree from clear-cut logging in 2012. In the winter of 2011, Dennis Cronin, a legal land surveyor for the company Teal Jones, which owns the timber rights for TFL 46, was sent to flag cut block 7190. On this day, he encountered the largest Douglas fir he had ever seen in his 40+ years in the logging industry.

He took it upon himself to flag the tree with a green ribbon that read leaf tree. This is the only reason the Lonely Doug still stands to this day. It has become a symbol of the devastation caused by old-growth logging. It stands 230 feet tall and is 12.8 m in diameter. This tree is an absolute must-see. The trail to the tree’s base is a very short but challenging couple of minutes.

Eden Grove

About 45 minutes from Port Renfrew up to Gordon Main logging Road is an old-growth forest named Eden Grove. This is not an official name. It was named by the ancient forest alliance to help bring awareness to the area as it is unprotected. A short trail that is mainly a boardwalk winds through one of this country’s most spectacular tracts of old-growth cedars and Douglas furs. The largest of which has a base of over 13 ft and has been given the name Soul Tree. This forest is in the territory of the Pacheedaht First Nations.
