West Coast Trail

West Coast Trail
The West Coast Trail is a 75 km trail following the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island. It was originally known as the Dominion Life Savings Trail. Constructed in 1907 to facilitate the rescue of survivors of the ship wrecks from what mariners called “The Graveyard of the Pacific.” In 1970 Parks Canada redeveloped the trail into what is known today as the West Coast Trail. Today it is considered one of the most challenging trails in North America. The day hike version of this trail from Bamfield to Pachena Point is much easier.
Aside from a few ladders and sketchy bridges, this potentially 20 km return trip is the best-kept portion of the trail. There are few if any, better ways to experience the unique coastal landscapes, old growth forest, birds, and wildlife of Vancouver island
